A person who would trade a little liberty for a little afety deserves neither and will lose both. (Benjamin Franklin) The following letter was published 4/23/07
How many times have we heard bush or one of his “lapdogs” try to compare his invasion and occupation of choice in Iraq with the Second World War?
My war was Korea, but I had three uncles who served in the “Big” War and were they still alive I believe that they would be deeply angered by this totally ridiculous comparison, unless your acknowledging that what the bush regime did in Iraq is reminiscent of what the Hitler regime did in Poland.
But; if they truly want to associate the two then lets go all the way to the civilian obligation and bring the entire Country into this current abomination. We could start with a mandatory draft with no rich kid deferments, re-instituting a 90 % income tax, such as we had even in the early 1950s, on those making over a certain amount or profiting from the war, rationing of gasoline and other items and a large “luxury” tax on all but the basic necessities. This “war tax”, would be imposed on, but not limited to luxury cars, boats, expensive jewelry, fur coats, imported wines, well you get the idea, but this time those funds should be used exclusively for Veteran care.
Of course, these suggestions will never be adopted in this “ I want it all country”, but most were in place during the Second World War and if the hypocrites still supportive of this unlawful occupation were sincere in their professed support of the troops, they would be demanding that all of us share, in part at least, the agony, sorrow and sacrifice that has to now been limited to a very small percentage of our people.
